Oxford City Stars have signed D-Man Michal Drobny – after he impressed in practice sessions during the summer.
The 22-year-old Slovakian previously played for Coventry Blaze at U18 and U20 and in 2019 he iced for Oxford University Blues and later for Oxford Vikings. He spent the last two seasons in Canada where he played 26 times for Edson Eagles in the Greater Metro Hockey League.
Drobny said: “I am very happy that I could play for Oxford City Stars. It is a dream come true as ever since I came to Oxford in 2019, I wanted to play for this team.
“I have been trying to make the leap between junior and men’s hockey for a long time. I believe that the Greater Metro Under 22’s Hockey League has given me the needed extra steps I was missing. I am very excited that I get a chance for Oxford to debut at men’s level.
“I thank the head coach Simon for trusting me and giving me a chance to help the team. It is a very good blend of experience and skill. There are some familiar faces but also many new ones to me, so I am grateful for the way I’ve been welcomed.”
Head Coach Simon Anderson said: “I’ve known Michal for a few years now. He skated with us a few seasons ago, but I didn't feel he was quite ready for this level at the time.
“To be fair to him he has gone away and spent a couple of seasons in Canada. The time there has really helped develop his game. He came for a skate on our first practice and myself and Shane Moore liked what we saw and we are giving Michal an opportunity to add some depth to our back end.
“Michal has good puck skills, very mobile for a big kid and has a good understanding of the game. We just felt with our senior D core and Shane we could really help to develop Michal and I feel he can only improve and we are excited to have him.”
