staples returns to oxford

D-Man Alex Staples has returned to Oxford City Stars.

The 31-year-old signed his contract this week to commit to the club for the 2021/22 campaign.

Staples who played for the Stars for three seasons between 2017 and 2020 had signed for Chelmsford Chieftains for the cancelled 2020/21 season.

But after talking to Stars’ head coach Dean Birrell the popular defender decided to return to Oxpens. He is another key signing for the Stars as the club prepares for its big return to action after a long void without ice hockey.

Staples said: “After nearly 18 months away it’s great ice hockey is finally back.

“I played for Dean a few years back and really enjoyed it. After having spoken to him over the summer I’m excited for what he has planned for the season ahead and I’m glad to be part of it.”

Birrell said: “Alex is an experienced player and he is a good signing for us. I’ll be looking to him to be a leader in the group and help us push the club forward.”
